Born in Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace on August 18, 1830, he became the Emperor Franz Joseph I. of Austria in December 1848. He ruled the multinational empire absolutistically and centralistically. Through the Compromise with Hungary 1867, where the Dual Monarchy Austria-Hungary was created, he became the King of Hungary. On April 24, 1854, Franz Joseph married the Bavarian princess Elisabeth. They had 4 children. The Emperor died of pneumonia on November 21, 1916, in the middle of World War I.
