Born as Ludwig Otto Friedrich Wilhelm on August 25, 1845, in Nymphenburg Palace, today Munich, he ascended the Bavarian throne as Ludwig II., King of Bavaria, after his father died in 1864. Ludwig never married but he became engaged to Duchess Sophie Charlotte, the younger sibling of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, in 1867. He funded the construction of some castles, for example the Neuschwanstein Castle and Herrenchiemsee Castle, but he also supported artists like Richard Wagner. On 13 June, 1866, King Ludwig drowned in Lake Starnberg.
